Test Procedure Analysis of the Blanket Flammability Test Machine

Testing Principle

Under specified laboratory conditions, the surface of the test specimen is exposed to a standardized flame for a predetermined period of time. The flammability performance of the textile is then classified by observing the burning behavior, degree of damage, or discoloration of the standard test paper.

Test Procedure

After completing specimen preparation and instrument adjustment, place the assembled specimen holder onto the specimen support.

Open the gas valve to supply gas to the burner tube and ignite the burner nozzle using the electronic igniter. Press the Start button on the control panel. Driven by the mechanical transmission system, the burner tube moves forward to the test position and applies the flame to both the specimen and the standard test paper mounted on the specimen holder.

Simultaneously with ignition, the timing system starts automatically, and the ignition time is displayed on the control panel screen. After 1 second, the burner tube retracts, the timer stops, and the test is completed. The specimen and the standard test paper are then removed for evaluation and classification.

A. Equipment Adjustment

Ensure that the Blanket Flammability Test Machine is in proper operating condition.

(1) Burner Position Adjustment

Using the height gauge:

Adjust the vertical distance between the burner tip and the specimen surface to 8 mm.

Move the specimen holder so that the horizontal distance between the center of the specimen and the burner tip is 3.2 mm during testing.

(2) Ignition Time Adjustment

Set the ignition time on the timer panel.

Press the Start button. The burner tube moves to the test position under motor drive and remains there for the preset duration, which represents the ignition time, before retracting.

If the dwell time displayed by the timer matches the preset value, the instrument is considered ready for testing.

(3) Flame Length Adjustment

Confirm that the instrument has been installed according to the operating manual.

Turn on the gas supply using technical-grade methane with a purity greater than 97.0%.

Purge the air from the gas pipeline for an appropriate period in a well-ventilated environment.

Ensure that the instrument is connected to the power supply.

Close the fume hood.

Ignite the burner and adjust the flame length to 16 mm (5/8 inch).

Measure the flame length using the flame gauge.

Note:

Before adjusting the flame height, the air inside the gas pipeline must be purged. The standard specifies a minimum purging time of 5 minutes, and this operation must be carried out inside a fume hood or in a well-ventilated area.

To avoid airflow interference during flame adjustment, ventilation equipment should be switched off.

Additional Note:

When using the height gauge, insert it into the specimen holder and move the burner until it touches the center of the gauge to achieve the required position.

When adjusting the flame length, align the flame gauge beside the flame. The width of the gauge corresponds to the standard flame height.

B. Specimen Preparation

(1) Cutting the Test Specimens and Standard Burning Test Paper

After testing, the flammability performance of the specimen is determined by evaluating the burning condition of the standard burning test paper.

Prepare:

10 test specimens, each measuring 70 mm × 70 mm:

5 specimens marked as the face side;

5 specimens marked as the reverse side.

10 pieces of standard burning test paper, each measuring 70 mm × 90 mm, with a 50 mm diameter circular opening cut in the center.

Note:

Both the face side and reverse side of the specimens shall each be tested five times.

The standard burning test paper shall be NNN-P-40b Type No. 2 Lens Paper.

(2) Brushing Treatment

Specimens with raised or pile surfaces shall be brushed using the brushing device prior to testing.

Non-pile specimens do not require this treatment.

Note:

The brushing device can also be used for 45-degree flammability testers, and the brushing force shall be maintained at 75 ± 10 g.

(3) Mounting the Specimens

Assemble the specimen holder in the following sequence:

Lower clamp plate → Test specimen → Standard burning test paper → Upper clamp plate

Ensure that:

The specimen is flat and wrinkle-free;

Both the specimen and the burning test paper are positioned at the center of the holder.

Thin specimens shall be secured using the clips supplied with the accessories.

Note:

Five specimen holders are provided as standard.

Up to five specimens, together with their corresponding burning test papers, may be mounted simultaneously.

All five specimens must be oriented with either the face side or the reverse side facing upward.

(4) Specimen Conditioning

Place the assembled specimens in an oven and dry them at 105 ± 3°C for 30 minutes.

After removal from the oven, place them over a desiccant and condition them for 30–60 minutes.

Note:

Avoid touching the brushed surface of treated specimens during handling.

No more than five dried specimens shall be placed over the desiccant at one time.

C. Testing Procedure

(1) Start the Test

Place the conditioned and assembled specimens, together with their specimen holders, onto the specimen support.

Note:

If specimen conditioning has been completed, testing shall begin immediately. According to the standard requirements, the test must commence within 30 seconds after removing the specimens from the desiccator.

(2) Conduct the Test

Turn on the main power switch of the instrument.

Set the ignition time on the timer to 1 second, and then start the test.

Press the instrument start button. The equipment begins operating automatically, the burner ignites, and the flame is applied to the specimen while the timer simultaneously starts recording.

Test five consecutive specimens (either all face-side or all reverse-side specimens). After the remaining five specimens have completed the drying and conditioning process, repeat the procedure for the subsequent tests.

Note:

Before each test, confirm that:

The specimens have been correctly installed on the specimen support;

The automatic flame application time has been accurately set to 1 second.
